ABOUT US

The Crewe Railroad Museum and Memorial were the conceived ideas of Col. Wirt Corrie, retired U.S. Air Corps officer serving in WWll, Korea and Vietnam.  It was his desire to dedicate a memorial to the men who worked the railroad since 1888.

The Town of Crewe was originally designed and established exclusively as a railroad community.  It was named after a famous railroad town in England and rich in history.  Please see our history page for more exciting details about Crewe, Virginia.

In 1992, Col. Corrie received a check in the amount of $5.75 from an anonymous donor to begin his dream of replicating the original train station.  With this check, generous donations, and volunteer labor of locals; the station was finished in 1997.  This accomplished, Col. Corrie turned his efforts towards the memorial.   A granite stone was engraved:  “THIS PLACE OF HISTORY AND MEMORY HONORS CREWE’S GENERATIONS OF DEDICATED RAILROADERS SINCE 1888.”

Due to health reasons, Col. Corrie was unable to complete his entire vision, but the friends of the Crewe Railroad Museum enthusiastically continued on with his project.  A committee of volunteer workers sponsored by the Homecoming Committee was organized.  It took another five years, but Col. Corrie’s dream of a memorial was completed.

The Crewe Railroad Museum is continually growing and serving to the delight of young and old in the N & W lore.  We would love to have volunteers and dedicated Rail Buffs to help.  This is a wonderful learning experience that you will greatly enjoy.  We are fortunate to have devoted volunteers such as Al Gerard who has provided us with models (he made to scale) of the trains traveling through Crewe in the 1950’s.  This exhibit alone is worth a trip to the Museum!
