Events
The third weekend in May of each year, Crewe celebrates Homecoming. Come join in as we kick off the festivities on Friday night at Hooper Park where you'll find fun for all ages. Ride or rope a bronco or take the more leisurely paced transportation of a hay or covered wagon. Take time to check out the vintage tractors and delight in the assorted farm animals that have come to town to meet you. Maybe you'd even like to try your skill at the rooster crowing contest! Whether you kick off your shoes, relax and enjoy the food, or dance till you drop; the music is sure to please.
Rise and shine early because on Saturday you'll want to come to the Community Center where old and new friends meet. There's coffee and snacks to get your body going. You'll need it too because there's two blocks of vendors with arts, crafts and food waiting just for you a short walk away on the main street. Children will love the train ride around town and you won't want to miss the parade starting at 3:00 p.m.
The whole town is a buzz of activity. You'll want to make sure you save time for a visit to the Crewe Train Museum and Memorial (right in the heart of town) located on Highway 460. It's open until 5:00 p.m. with special events planned. We'll be open all day so please come by for a chat! Take a tour of the museum, see the working tools of the Railroad men, climb on the big diesel engine if you like and explore the caboose. For the children we even have a 'play' train to ride around the station.
The Crewe Train Museum and Memorial
offers school and group tours by appointment. Advance notice is preferred
in order
to
give the special attention you deserve. Boy Scouts are offered a day
program that enables them to earn railroading merit badges. This is taught
by Jerry Smith and volunteers. We support the safety program, "Operation
Life Saver". Given by a knowledgeable trainman.
If time permits, we have a wonderful tape collection available for your viewing. In the "Gift Shop" you will find T-shirts, Railroad Cookbooks, Crewe's Centennial Book, dated collector plates, VHS videotapes and much more. Videos currently on sale are the "Tour of the Crewe Railroad Museum and Memorial" and "1950's Steam Era" by Al Gerard. Just published "Nottoway Notes" - a collection of historical essays by Wirt Corrie. Just Come spend some time with us. We'll be waiting to reminisce with antidotes of Crewe lore that will hopefully bring much laughter and maybe even a tear. It's sure to be a fun experience for the whole family.
